Step 5: Assign transactions

Once your budget is set, now you move into the day-to-day maintenance of it. This is primarily done through assigning transactions. Every transaction that goes through your bank account will first appear in your Shared account’s Activity tab.

All of these transactions are either deducted or added to your Shared Spend Amount. That is, unless you assign them elsewhere.

How do I assign a transaction?

If you swipe right on a transaction, it will reveal the Assignment Drawer. From here you can assign this transaction to any of the three virtual accounts: Yours, your partner’s, or to a stash within Shared (where it’s already assigned by default).

What happens if I assign a transaction to a stash?

The transaction will remain under your Shared Activity tab, but it will be earmarked with whichever stash you’ve assigned it to. The transaction amount will be deducted from the assigned stash, rather than your Shared Spend amount. This means your Spend amount should go up! (Or down, if the transaction was a deposit).

What happens if I assign a transaction to myself?

The transaction will disappear from the Shared Activity tab and move to your Personal Activity tab. This means your partner will no longer be able to view this transaction, as it has been moved from your Shared account. From here you can swipe right to either assign it to a stash within your own budget, or send it to a different virtual account (back to Shared, or to your Partner).

What if I want my partner to be able to see my Transactions?

No problem! Many couples prefer to budget with more transparency, and this can be a great way to decrease risk of miscommunication or increase accountability. Just tap the eyeicon to the upper right of the screen on your Personal Overview, and confirm.

Once your partner is allowed access, they will be able to view your activity, budget, and allowance details.

What happens if I assign a transaction to my partner?

The transaction will disappear from the Shared Activity tab and move to your Partner’s Activity tab. You will need to confirm that you are certain, as this means you will no longer be able to view this transaction, unless your partner moves it back into the Shared account.

What if I would like to see my partner’s transactions?

Your partner is able to adjust their privacy settings as well, using the instructions above.

What if there isn’t enough money in my allowance?

Your Personal allowance can never go negative. This means that once your allowance runs out, you can no longer assign yourself any transactions. Any transactions you’d like to cover must either stay in the Shared account where you and your partner can decide where else to assign them. Or they can wait until more money has been transferred into your Personal account.
