Budget Categorization

While categorizing your stashes is completely optional, it can be a great way to make your budget more skimmable and less visually overwhelming. Categorization also allows you to see exactly how much you have set aside toward each category.

Curious to find out how much you have going toward groceries or entertainment this month? Breaking it down in Halfsies is super easy.

To get started, head over to your budget in the middle nav bar. Tap on the three dots in the upper right corner, and select “Manage categories”

At this point your categories should be empty. Let’s add a new one.

Tap on the plus button in the upper right corner.

To create a new category, all you have to do is name the category you’d like to create and assign a color to it. You can either pick one of the presets, or create a custom color you like better.

And that’s it! Hit “Confirm” to create your category.

When you tap on “manage categories” again, you’ll see your newly created category listed. Here you can edit your categories, as well as create or delete more.

Let’s create a few more to really flesh out our budget.

That sure looks visually great, but what do we do with them?

Once your categories are created, you’ll want to start assigning stashes to them. You assign stashes a category when creating a new one, or by editing an existing one.

Either way, just look for the "category" section and use the drop down to select the category you'd like.

From this drop down you can also create a new category, or remove a category if you change your mind later.

Now that you’ve finished categorizing your stashes, your budget is looking a lot more colorful. But it still might feel a bit cattywampus. How can we organize it even more?

To sort your budget by category, simply tap the Filter button to the upper right of your budget, and select Sort by: Category.

Now your stashes are color coded and sorted by category!

But how else can categories help you budget?

Let’s say you want to figure out how much you have set aside for Food this month. Simply tap on the filter button again and go to the “show only” section.

Here you can select the category (or categories) you’d like to see, and deselect any you don’t.

Now let’s take another look at your budget. Your “currently budgeted” amount up top is how much you have set aside right now for food.

Feel free to use this feature for checking in on how much you've budgeted toward any category, (or categories) at any given time.

Happy budgeting!
